I do love my job...
I really do love my job. It’s 10.30pm and I’m deep into a draft of an affidavit. I’ve got through about four rounds of my ballet score playlists. I’m at home so I have my wee cat sitting next to me (pawing at post-its on my pleadings folder, aw). I’m downing cups of tea and getting lost in crafting a narrative for a client.
It feels pretty damned good, let me say.
I love advocating for clients, especially in disputes they feel strongly about (you’d be surprised how many commercial matters that happens in), and especially in disputes with big knotty legal issues. I love that I get the chance to take on their cause as mine and (hopefully) take it further than they could by themselves. I love immersing myself in a case, learning everything I can about it, then drafting the claim or defence or evidence or whatever it happens to be. It’s complex, it’s hard, and it’s really really satisfying.
I also love the freedom I have in this job – to work into the night, or in a café, or next to my partner while he studies, all while listening to great music that lights me up. I love that I get to teach myself new and wonderfully interesting things (risk management for boards, anyone?), or directly ask my favourite businesses what makes them tick (thanks for Tuesday, CQ!).
What I’m saying is I am grateful, so grateful, to be doing what I do. My work stretches my brain, gets me working with and for people I respect and from whom I learn so much, all in exactly the time and space that I choose. It’s a joy that most people don’t get, and I am so so grateful that I do.
Back to it then – time to finalise a statement of claim before bed.
